Modern biomedical research has fundamentally changed in recent years due to radical advances in biotechnology. The central pillar is the generation of large data sets (e.g. -omics). The examination of these data requires sophisticated and largely novel analysis and processing pipelines, which put a strong emphasis on bioinformatics methods and tools as well as mathematical models. This development is fast-paced to the extend that for most problems, no 'off the shelf' (see Fig. 1) solution exists. Many research institutes struggle with sustainable solutions to tackle this situation.

On this account, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has established the Bioinformatics Solution Center (BSC) as a central contact point for scientific services, research collaborations and education.
